Implementing Anti-Discrimination Policies in Statistical Profiling Models*

چکیده
How should statistical models used for assigning prices or eligibility status in insurance, college enrollment, social-benefit provision, and other settings be implemented when there is a concern about discrimination? In many settings policies are in place that prohibit the direct use of factors such as race, gender, and age. However, there is a large and contentious gray area surrounding the use of other variables (e.g., zip codes and credit scores) that are likely to be highly correlated with these omitted characteristics. We provide a framework to discuss this question and propose a method that serves to eliminate bias while maintaining efficiency relative to alternative models that eliminate key variables. We illustrate the value of our proposed method using data from the federally mandated Worker Profiling and Reemployment Services system. The association between anti-immigrant policies and perceived discrimination among Latinos in the US: A multilevel analysis
Research has found a strong inverse association between discrimination and health and well-being. Most of these studies have been conducted among African-Americans, and have examined the relationship at the individual-level. To fill these gaps in knowledge we estimated the prevalence of perceived discrimination among a nationally representative sample of Latino adults in the US, and investigate...

There are a wide vari...
متن کاملA multidisciplinary survey on discrimination analysis
The collection and analysis of observational and experimental data represent the main tools for assessing the presence, the extent, the nature, and the trend of discrimination phenomena. Data analysis techniques have been proposed in the last fifty years in the economic, legal, statistical, and, recently, in the data mining literature. This is not surprising, since discrimination analysis is a ...
